Story
Hi everyone - my name is Kayn, a Yorta Yorta and Gunnai legend and this is my dad, Steve and we are both proud Magpie supporters and we are hoping to get support from other Magpies supporters out there too.
In September 2013 dad and I are setting off on a 5 day trek along the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges to raise much needed funds for Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV).
I am doing this 'walkabout for change' with my dad so that I can raise money to help Aboriginal kids have the same things as me and be able to do fun stuff with their families like I get to do with my family. My mum, Karen Milward is a Co-Chaiperson of ICV and I want to show mum that I can help out too even though I am only 14 and I can do this by doing one of the fun things I do with my dad which is doing walks in the outdoors and camping in cool places like Alice Springs. ICV also works with my community in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne so I want to be a part of this too:)
Mum tells me that ICV works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to build on local strengths and knowledge. They work on projects that have been identified as part of a community’s own vision for their future, improving quality of life, health, social and economic wellbeing and inclusion within Australian society. ICV provides access to highly skilled volunteers in urban, rural and remote communities where employment, economic development and education opportunities are often limited.
Thanks for your support.
Kayn and Steve:)
Activity
COMMUNITY FIRST DEVELOPMENT LIMITED
Community First Development is a registered charity and non-profit organisation working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to improve quality of life, wellbeing and social inclusion. Our vision is for an Australia where all Australians live in harmony and where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people share the same rights, respect and access to opportunities and rewards, and where their culture is valued and recognised as an asset to Australian society. Community First Development is invited by communities to help them overcome disadvantage. Our role is to support communities with skills and resources not normally available to them. We do this with the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers from all walks of life, from child care to construction, medicine to manufacturing, and gardening to grant-writing.
